Relaxing holiday in Serbia

Relaxing holiday: Yoga, Walking and Crafts

Overview

Our relaxing and revitalizing retreat will take you to the beautiful wine valley of Župa, in the heart of Serbia, near the town of Aleksandrovac. The one week long stay combines daily yoga sessions, traditional crafts workshops, and walking in the nature. Our intention is to balance the activities with quiet times, so you leave feeling replenished and relaxed.

We stay in a 200 year old hamlet run by a local family. The few houses remaining in the tiny village have been carefully renovated, with the original quirky charm of the place lovingly preserved. The food is all organic, locally sourced and prepared. Fruits and vegetables are delicious, wonderfully aromatic, thanks to many sunny days this region is blessed with.

The days start with a morning yoga session run by our professional yoga teacher, Neda. The sessions are based on Hatha style and adapted to all levels. During the rest of the day you can choose between crafts and cooking workshops, walking in the nature or simply chilling out. All workshops and walks are accompanied by your friendly hosts, eager to make your stay an enjoyable, memorable experience.

This trip is perfect for those who would like to relax and be active, who enjoy yoga and outdoors, who appreciate good food and wine, nature and good company.

Here is a taste of what to expect on this holiday.

Highlights

Yoga

Yoga sessions are run every morning before breakfast. Our yoga teacher Neda will lead you through an hour of stretches and breathing exercises, which appease the mind and revitalize the body. Your session can be as vigorous or as gentle as you like, all levels are welcome. We will practice outdoors on the grass, or on the terrace or library in an unlikely case of rain. In the evenings relaxation sessions are available.

Walking

Walks in the nature are organized every day - weather permitting - and vary in length from short strolls to a few hour hikes. On days when longer walks are planned, we will bring picnic lunches with us. You are free to choose whether you will join a walk or rather stay in the village soaking up the sunshine in the garden, chilling out with a book, dozing off on the grass or lounging on the summer veranda; or maybe bake a cake with our cook.

Crafts and handiwork

Our craft workshops are a perfect opportunity to learn something new, nourish your creativity and satisfy your curiosity. A variety of crafts are available - weaving, knitting, embroidery, crochet, pottery, and painting. All activities are accompanied and no previous experience is needed. You will take home a new skill and the fruit of your efforts.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in a 200 year old hamlet run by a local family. The same family built and has owned the tiny village for generations. The few remaining houses are carefully renovated to provide a comfortable stay. The original architecture and a quirky charm of the place have been lovingly preserved. The rooms are cosy, colourfully decorated with restored furniture. Most rooms are double bedded and with one bathroom shared between two rooms.
A large garden and a summer decking overlooking a fish pond offer plenty of space for yoga and craft activities. The lush greenery, plenty of flowers and our generous hosts create a lively, yet tranquil environment perfect for a relaxing holiday.

Food

All the dishes are prepared by the host family from organic and locally sourced produce. This region benefits from plenty of sunshine from spring to autumn which produces wonderful, aromatic, tasty fruits and vegetables of all sorts – a heaven for veggie lovers. All dietary requirements can be catered for.

Here you will find the traditional cuisine at its best. Home-made yoghurt and white cheese, corn bread, variety of salads and grilled fresh fish.

A spacious terrace is available for Al fresco dining in the warm summer evenings.

Some of the best wines Serbia has to offer can be found here.

Bon appétit! Or "prijatno" in Serbian.

Surroundings

Some time at the beginning of the last century, the French consul Décaut stayed in the south-east region of Serbia called Župa, nested in a valley between four mountains Kopaonik, Željin, Goč and Jastrebac. Delighted by the vineyards he found in Župa, and surprised by the climate similar to that of Bordeaux, he enthusiastically named Župa "the second Champagne in Europe”.

Grapes and wine are the life and the heart of the region. The vineyards spread down the slopes of rolling hills, basking in sunshine from spring to autumn. The nearby town of Aleksandrovac has a little museum dedicated to the wine tradition. There are many wine cellars, small and large, some of which produce wines of the highest quality.

There are many opportunities for spending time in the fresh air - walks along mountain springs, collecting medicinal herbs, exploring forests and meadows.

Day by day schedule of the stay

The exact daily itinerary will depend on the weather. Summers are normally warm and sunny in Serbia, with occasional summer showers.

The days start with the morning yoga session. After the breakfast in the village there is an option of walks and crafts workshops. We take lunches either in the village or as a picnic during longer walks. The evening meal is prepared in the village, after which there is plenty of opportunity for socializing with like-minded people or resting.

Of course, the schedule is very flexible. You always have a choice between joining the proposed activities and enjoying some quiet time for yourself.

We won’t reveal all the details right away. Sometimes, it is nice to let go and enjoy a surprise :)

Day 1: Early morning start with transfer from Belgrade to our village near the southern town of Aleksandrovac. We will break the 3.5 hour ride with a stop at the Royal Grounds Oplenac near the town Topola. We will visit the museum dedicated to the Serbian royal dynasty Karadjordjevic and admire its magnificent blue mosaics of St. George’s Church. The buildings are surrounded with a vineyard and a park where we will have a quick picnic lunch. Upon arrival to the village we meet our hosts and settle in the accommodation. In the evening, there is a relaxing yoga session followed by a delicious home made dinner.

Day 2-6: The daily programme is very flexible and gives each person a choice whether to wake up early and start the day with the energising yoga session or lie in. Throughout the day you can choose to join a craft workshop, go for a walk in the nature or relax in the garden. You are free to socialise with likeminded people or to retreat to a secluded corner as the village offers plenty of open space and many quiet charming corners.

Morning: We start off at 7:30 with 90 minutes of yoga. A delicious home made breakfast follows. After breakfast, mornings are reserved for traditional crafts – pottery, knitting, embroidery, and crochet. The local craft makers will reveal to us a few secrets of their beautiful handwork. At the end of our stay we will organize a display of all the lovely craft objects we have produced during our workshops and admire our newly acquired skills.

Afternoon: After the workshops we have lunch. On some days lunch is prepared in the village, on other days we enjoy a picnic lunch in the nature. After lunch we go for an afternoon walk to explore surroundings. We pass by rustic villages where only few inhabitants remain, shaded tree lined rural roads, grass fields, wild fruit trees, hills with beautiful views. One afternoon we will walk to the nearby town and visit a local museum dedicated to wine and wine-making. On the way back we will stop in one of the best local wine cellars and have a chance to taste the highest quality wines of the region.

Evening: A relaxing yoga session is available every evening. A delicious dinner is prepared in the village by the host family. After dinner you may have an early night or you may stay in the communal area, where wireless internet network is available, updating you travel blog. The communal area is conveniently situated so that guests who don’t need much sleep can stay and chat without disturbing the sleepyheads.

Day 7: Bidding goodbye to our hosts after breakfast and transfer to Belgrade. We will break the ride with a visit to … well, let it be a surprise!
